“Andy Warhol’s Exposures” includes a chapter on the Beales. This is the origin of the photograph of Little Edie that will be auctioned at Christie’s on April 5th, 2013. This is the book where Andy Warhol published a photograph of Little Edie and it was one of the same series that we are offering in the auction.

Warhol named this chapter “The Best Family” and he started his introduction to the Beales by saying “I think the best family in the world is the Kennedy-Onassis-Bouvier-Beale-Radziwill family.” He goes on to say that “they have so many great characteristics in the family. He lists them all and included is “Edie Jr.” as we know her “Little Edie.”

Andy Warhol writes that just like Jackie and Lee were the best sister act in town, Big Edie and Little Edie were the best mother-daughter act. He had visited Grey Gardens a few years before Big Edie died and he said that he went into Big Edie’s bedroom and wrote “Even though she was in her seventies, she was beautiful. She had a lot of pure white hair, a beautiful straight nose, and big blue eyes.” He also mentions when Little Edie came into the bedroom and mentions “Her head was wrapped in a scarf because she shaved her hair off years ago….” – and he goes on to say “She looked very glamorous in that brown silk scarf.” This is the scarf that she is wearing in the photo that will be auctioned on April 5th.

Andy Warhol found the Beales intriguing and he seemed to enjoy the element of surprise around them. In the Exposures he talks about Big Edies funeral and how the priest made a speech about Big Edie and in the end pushed a button to play the song “We Belong Together” in which Big Edie had recorded in her opera voice.

I have always been passionate about chandeliers. Walking into a room with antique crystal chandeliers is always so warm and adds so much to the decor.  Light truly influences the mood of the home and I have purchased a few chandeliers and they have transformed my home.

Rachel Ashwell inspired me to have more than one in my home. I enjoy her books and met her on two occasions. I adore her style and although Grey Gardens chic is a bit different, I enjoy some of the same fabrics,ironstone, paintings,and lighting fixtures as Rachel does.

There are many different styles of crystal chandeliers- each with their own charm.  Some have more lights, others are more subtle, but they all have the potential to enhance the decorated room or make it more appealing.

This is the first time I am offering a chandelier plus sconces on my website. I fell in love with these  pieces and thought you might share my opinion. This chandelier is available for purchase on the Grey Gardens Collections website here.

Above is a photo of a magnificent late 19th to early 20th century multi-tiered wedding cake crystal chandelier, the top crowned with a cascading crystals attached to a central frame, which supports 5 arms that end in alternating lights and crystal prisms.

Fine Living: Invite a socialite’s aesthetics into your home

THE LATE EDITH Bouvier Beale, or “Little Edie” as the world would come to know her, was a popular New York socialite and daring style icon of the 1920s and ’30s, not to mention one of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’ most famous cousins.

Eva Marie Beale, though, knew her as the family showstopper. The Mill Valley resident first met “Little Edie,” the subject of two hit films and an inspiration to fashion designers and a legion of fans, at her wedding rehearsal dinner to Little Edie’s nephew, Bouvier Beale, in 1980.

“She was beyond all my expectations,” Beale recalls. “She was the life of the party. She spoke to all of the guests and was really extroverted. She loved stealing the show and was very good at it.”

Since then, Beale has published several books on her charming in-law: “Edith Bouvier Beale of Grey Gardens, A Life in Pictures” (2008) and “I Only Mark the Hours That Shine: Little Edie’s Diary — 1929″ (2010). A new book of “Little Edie’s” poetry is due to be published this year.

On September 14, 1929 Edie wrote  about “Mother’s party” in her diary I Only Mark the Hours that Shine (recently published and available at Greygardenscollections.com and one  can imagine the fine table settings, and how things looked at Grey Gardens set up for the dinner with 18 guests!

Look closely at the linens – beautiful off-white antique linens with Edie’s initials: EB!

The plates are a display of beautiful flowers – tulips, roses, and dahlia’s – with a pink and gold trim. They are of the finest – on the back it is marked “P.T. Bavaria Tirschenreuth, Decorated in Own Studios” – these are rare and beautiful and in perfect condition. They are hand painted and really have a great look.

You can mix and match and really make your table sensational. For example, these dishes are really high quality porcelain and mixed with the country style ironstone works! It really has a nice look. Start collecting  ironstone as you find a piece you like and mix it with some of your favorite china.  Eventually you will end up with a great collection!

Now I have added a French pattern “Luneville” to the table and mixing with the ironstone is very appealing.  The old wicker basket painted in “Grey Gardens Green” brings color to the table and it works!

Antique Hydrangea Fabric by Grey Gardens Collections

To introduce myself, my name is Eva Marie Beale, and I am married to Bouvier Beale — whose Grandmother (Big Edie) and Aunt (Little Edie) lived at Grey Gardens in East Hampton. Their story was made famous by the Maysles Brothers documentary in the 70s, and more recently by the HBO movie, “Grey Gardens,” starring Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore.

After Little Edie passed away in 2002, we made the decision to put together a book of photographs and writing from her early life and published “Edith Bouvier Beale of Grey Gardens, A Life in Pictures.” We wanted to share some of the images we have of Edie as she was growing up, and give some background on her early history.

While working on the book, I became absorbed into the time period and the style of the era. Little Edie inspired me in many ways as I began to understand her story.

For years I have been treasure hunting at flea markets around the world and developing my own design sense. As these two interests came together, it seemed a natural progression to develop a line of items called “Grey Gardens Collections,” as a tribute to Little Edie.

Where to start? Naturally, I thought the best way to start would be with antiques and vintage items. I was very familiar with some of the items that Edie left behind, like her famous French opera glasses – or a beautiful silver tray.  These items share one thing in common — opulence.

My desire has been to develop a style defined by luxury combined with comfort that evokes the lifestyle of the Big and Little Edie at Grey Gardens during the 30s and 40s. I have always been attracted to antique paintings, fabric, silver, ironstone – and other antiques that together create décor with an eclectic feel.

One of Grey Gardens Collections’ first projects was an antique hydrangea fabric design inspired by photos of Big and Little Edie posing outside of the house, in front of Hydrangea bushes. Our Antique Hydrangea fabric is available in three colorways (pink, blue and white) and also available as pillows.

We will also be developing wallpaper, duvet covers, table covering and more. Stay tuned!
